DFW Zone Nonprofit Helping Residents In Financial Straits – CBS Dallas / Fort Worth


DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – If you have financial difficulties like being unable to pay your rent or having unpaid medical bills, you don’t always have to struggle and suffer.

There are agencies that help people get through tough times with access to millions of dollars.

Rebecca Walls is the Executive Director of the nonprofit Unite DFW which connects a network of 600 churches in the area to help people overcome not only rent and mortgage issues but also medical expenses, challenges financial related to education and child care, among other challenges.

“That’s why I’m so excited about this kind of opportunity to spread the word because it’s really about letting them know that there is help and that there is has a trusted place to go, ”Walls said.

A place to go for around 300,000 DFW households who the agency said had little or no confidence that they would be able to pay their November 2021 rent.

While 27% of DFW children live in a household that does not know where their next meal will come from.

When her husband passed away suddenly last year, Melissa Vickers faced more than unbearable grief.

“It left me $ 1,000 less per month and I was 15 months behind on rent,” Vickers said.

Fifteen months overdue amounted to more than $ 10,000 in overdue rent for his Southeast Dallas County home.

Vickers asked for government help with the rent, but came nowhere.

“I had to go get some advice,” she said.

But Vickers and his family are caught up with the rent because of Unite DFW.

“People just don’t expect it to be help, especially the rental help available out there, it’s too good to be true,” Walls said.
